|On Monday evening we received word that the organization that has funded our operations in Manila and Davao are no longer able to continue with us. We are so grateful for the partnership they have extended to us over the years, giving a firm foundation for our broadcast and media ministries here in the Philippines. The Lord is now directing their attention to other needs across Asia and the Pacific and we pray blessings upon these new media projects.
However, we are now left with making choices to further streamline UCB Media Philippines to minimize expenses without jeopardizing ministry. Some of you may recall that we went through this process before. Within our first month in country in 2012 we were informed we needed to relocate the ministry and slash our expenses by 50%. It was not the welcome to the mission field that we had hoped for, but we made some hard sacrifices during that time and God richly blessed it. Our mobile and web ministries were launched as a result of that season and shortly their after the government began approving our petitions for frequencies.
This new season of transition sadly means even more painful cuts. The Edge Radio Davao (unlike all of other stations which are independently funded) also received their funding from this same group. I had the displeasure of informing them yesterday that this will be their last month of ministry after 10 years. The budget cuts in Manila where I serve as the General Manager for UCB are having a similar impact. We are looking to soon close our ministry offices and studio and bring the operations to our home to help reduce expenses. Unfortunately this will take time, as our current home is too small to accommodate the ministry and our family. We are praying for a larger space that will do both and fit within our budget. At the same time, we have no other choice but to suspend the allowances of our Filipino team. They are amazing people and so far everyone of them as agreed to stay on with us during this transition.
Kim and I both sense that the Lord is leading us in this season to take on the financial needs of the ministry. Honestly, we don’t know how that is going to work as we have struggled with our own funding. However, the Lord has called us to this work and the hearts and minds of young Filipinos are worth it. Please pray for us. We know that trials and pain in the life of the believer are never without purpose and we are believing that God will use this time to launch an exciting and even more effective chapter of ministry for UCB Media Philippines.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:2-5
Even now, God is in the process of making us “complete.” I will be back in the states one week from today to pick up a new transmitter provided through the generosity of our supporters to bring back the Edge Guihulngan. Praise the Lord! This transmitter represents 1 Million Filipinos living in the Central Visayas that will now have access to FM Christian music radio for the very first time!!! Guihulngan will soon join the our station in Kidapawan (which now reaches 2.5 million people in Muslim-concentrated Central Mindanao) as part of the growing, Gospel-proclaiming Edge Radio Network.
Thank you standing with us and praying for us during this time. Beyond provision, we ask that you pray specifically for wisdom and grace as we navigate all the decisions and things that have to happen . Also, please pray for the success of my upcoming trip and that God would provide opportunities for me to share our work with new potential partners and churches while I’m there. We are praying and believing God for 4 partner churches that would be willing to take on the support of the ministry at $500 per month. Kim and I will now be responsible for raising the funds needed for the Manila operations in addition to our personal needs. Now, more than ever we humbly invite your support.
